I started teaching at Yucca Elementary in 2015 and I am very excited to be your children's art teacher! I want to share a little about my background and education, as well as some of my philosophy about art.
I am a native Arizonan and was born and raised in Winslow to a large railroad family. I knew from a young age that I was an artist, but it took me some years to realize that I was also a teacher. I had another career and became a mother to two children before I began my college education. I attended a number of community colleges, taking a class at a time, as my young family and career would allow. IN 1994 I took the plunge and started college full time at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff. The following year I also began attending NAU. I have a Bachelor of Science in Arts Management and in 1998 received a Master of Arts in Art Education.
At that time, I made a choice to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending art school. I moved across the country with my five year old grandson to attend graduate school at the Savannah College of Art & Design. I was awesome! I graduated from there with an MFA in Painting in 2001. I was offered a job as an elementary art teacher with Savannah Public Schools. I taught there three years before returning to Arizona to be closer to my family. I have been teaching in Arizona since that time, grades Kindergarten - High school.
I want your children to experience the joy of art and have it be accessible without a lot of expensive art supplies. Your child can expect to learn about famous artists, create art and learn to use art to develop a creative problem-solving process. We have a changing art display in the entryway of the school and will soon be adding artwork to this website. I look forward to working with your terrific children.
